Wake & Bake

If you don’t know the term, it is when you smoke cannabis first thing when you wake up. If you smoke with your morning cuppa Joe, it is called a “hippie speedball.” Partaking within the first hour of waking up is more popular than one might think.

A global drug survey from 2017 shows that Americans have the highest rate of any country at 21.9%. Mexico is next in line at 18.4%, Greece is at 15.9%, our brother to the north comes in at 14.9%, and lastly Brazil at 14.3%.(1)

People report that when doing this they feel “higher,” and for a longer period of time than if they were to consume later in the day. Some guess that the reason is because you are still sleepy or that your body hasn’t moved around any nutrients during your slumber. But a more scientific approach to the question might be closer to the truth.

At this point you know that our ECS is a regulator. This also includes our circadian

rhythm (our internal clock that tells us when we are hungry and when to fall asleep and wake up). According to an article scientifically reviewed by Codi Peterson, PharmD, “Research has shown that the amounts of all three components of the ECS endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes—fluctuate throughout the day. One study of healthy adults found that the levels of anandamide, one of the two major endocannabinoids, are three times higher after waking up compared to immediately

before sleep.” (2)

But whatever the reason, there are things to consider before choosing to wake and bake. What do you have planned for the day? Will you be driving any time soon? These answers will tell you if you have the luxury of a slow sipping hippie speedball for breakfast.
